Restoring Christ Church

Preserving history and craftmanship

Christ Church in Philadelphia stands as a monumental testament to American history, blending religious significance with architectural grandeur. Founded in 1695 under William Penn’s Charter, and the first Parish Church of England in Pennsylvania, this historic church has witnessed pivotal moments and housed some of the most iconic figures of the American Revolution. For a painting company, the opportunity to contribute to its preservation is both an honor and a responsibility, reflecting not only skill and craftsmanship but also respect for the cultural and historical significance of this structure.

A Historical Marvel

Christ Church holds a vital place in the tapestry of American history. Renowned as the birthplace of the American Episcopal Church, it has been home to many prominent historical figures like Benjamin and Deborah Franklin, Betsy Ross, and John Penn, who was William Penn’s grandson. Signers of both the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, including Robert Morris, Benjamin Rush, and Francis Hopkinson, also worshipped within its walls.

The church’s Georgian architecture, recognized as among the finest in America, was crafted with precision and foresight. The current building, completed in 1744, reflects the sophistication of its era, with a steeple designed in 1754 by Robert Smith. Interestingly, the construction of this steeple was financed by a lottery organized by none other than Benjamin Franklin. For 56 years, this steeple made Christ Church the tallest structure in North America, further establishing its prominence in architectural history.

The Painting Company’s Role

Painting and restoration work on Christ Church are far more than simple maintenance tasks; they are acts of stewardship for a national treasure. the painting company undertaking such a project must not only delicately balance the need for restoration but also preserve historical authenticity. A company must be skilled and experienced in historical restoration to confidently undertake such a project. With Buttonwood Painting’s expert employees, the job was skillfully completed and the historical building revitalized.

Christ Church’s Unique Challenges

Working on a structure of this age and significance comes with unique challenges. The church has endured centuries of weathering, urban development, and evolving conservation standards. Moreover, its location in the heart of Philadelphia—a city rich in colonial history—requires adherence to strict preservation guidelines. The discovery of the "Revolutionary Tunnel" in 1909 beneath a nearby hardware store adds an additional layer of intrigue to the church’s history. The entrance to the tunnel was accidentally found by Edward Duncan and other workmen beneath the hardware store of James M. Vance & Co. at 211-13 Market Street. Philadelphia newspapers, such as the Bulletin, The Press, and others, ran articles about the discovery. Unearthing and documenting such features is a delicate process, demanding close collaboration between historians and restoration experts.

Symbolism and Significance

Beyond its architectural beauty, Christ Church holds profound cultural and moral significance. Its role in Philadelphia’s history of slavery and abolition is a sobering reminder of America’s complex past. The church stands within walking distance of the waterfront where thousands of Africans arrived after surviving the transatlantic slave trade.

One of its most inspiring stories is that of Absalom Jones, who began his life enslaved to a vestryman of the church. Later, after securing freedom for himself and his wife, Jones became the first African American Episcopal priest. His story reflects resilience and progress, themes embodied by the church itself for years to come.

Modern-Day Engagement

Today, Christ Church remains an active Episcopal parish, drawing visitors from across the world for historical tours and daily talks. It is a privately managed historic site and an official component of Independence National Historical Park. Although the Church is a part of the park, it remains independent.  It continues to inspire, educate, and remind us of the values upon which America was founded. For the painting company tasked with its preservation, their work not only protects a structure but also ensures that future generations can connect with its rich history. The craftsmanship applied to Christ Church echoes the skills of the original builders, honoring their legacy while preserving the church’s aesthetic and structural integrity. While a challenge to most painters, Buttonwood confidently took on the task, working expertly to preserve such an important piece of our American history. The church is an active congregation of the Episcopal Church in the United States, and the building continues to be used regularly for worship.

Conclusion

The restoration of Christ Church is more than a project; it is a contribution to America’s heritage. By restoring its grandeur and safeguarding its historical elements, Buttonwood Painting has played a pivotal role in ensuring this iconic structure endures. From the delicate steeple financed by Benjamin Franklin’s lottery to the inspiring legacy of figures like Absalom Jones, Christ Church serves as a timeless reminder of the resilience and ingenuity that shaped a nation, and to take on a project as important and foundational as that requires skill that not many painting companies are known to attain. For those involved in its preservation, the work is not just a task but a meaningful chapter in the story of a truly remarkable landmark.
